Political.—Mr G. J. Smith, one of the members for Christchurob, addressed a large meeting at the Tuam street Hall last night, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.

Dbunkbnness.—At Kaiapoi yesterday, before J. L. Wilson, Esq., J.P., a first offender was fined 5s and costs.

Ranoioba Athletic Association.—At the final meeting of the Committee of the Rangiora Athletic Association, the receipts for the New Year's Day gathering were reported to have been £189 9a 2d, and, after the payment of the accounts, there was a balance in hand for next year's account.

ACCIDENT AT GIiKNTONNBL.—The Widow of (he late Sydney MoKeruher has received £25 from the Coal Miners , Accident Fund, and an allowance of 15s 6d a week for herself and child from the Kaitangata Fund. The trophy was won by M. Moir with a total of 10points; W.J. Moir 6 points, J. Moir 5 points, C. Jones and 8. Ogden equal 1 point. The final race was most exciting, being won on the touch by M. The companies were marched to the North Park, where they were exercised in attack and defence movements., Sale of Stock.—Messrs Pyne and Co. and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile held a sale of stock at Cheviot on Wednesday. There was a fair entry of cattle and sheep and a capital attendance of settlers, but competition for all classes of stock was most inaifferenb. Both sheep and cattle were brought forward in first class condition. Fair hoggets brought up to 7a 6d, merino wethers 2s 10d, fat crossbred wethers passed in at 10a, do. 4-tooth ewes 9a. Springing heifers sold at from £4 to £6. Cows in profit up to £7 10s, yearlings and two-year-olds, mixed sexes, in no case reached owners' reserves, which were fully up to. Addington values. Parliament out of Session.—Mr W. W. Tanner. M.H.R. for Avon, will address his constituents on Monday next at the Phillipetown school, and on Wednesday at the Druids' Hall, Ohoka.

liieatke Royal.—" Paul Jones " was repeated last night at the Theatre Royal, when there was a very large attendance. The opera went very brightly and well, and the audience were most demonstrative in their applause. To-night there will be a change of programme, the opera to be presented being " The Mountebanks." This was written by Gilbert and Cellier, and the opera is spoken of as being very fanny, besides being also tuneful. Swimming Champiohsiup.—Mr G. J. C. Smart, the local Consul to the Swimming Association, received a letter from Mr Moloney, Secretary of the New South Walo3 Association, yesterday, informing him that a team of swimmers and enthusiasts, including Dr. Kelly of Balmain and Mr T. J. Moloney, intend coming over bo take part in .the championships to be held in the first week in March. This will give the Canterbury people a chance of seeing how the Sydney boys get through the water in such fast times.

Domestic Instruction.—A meeting of the Committee of the intended School of Domestic Instruction was held yesterday. The Hon. Secretary, Mrs R. Heaton Rhodes, stated that the sum of £125 had been already subscribed the £15CT required before the Government subsidy could be claimed, and undertook to guarantee that the full amount of £150 should be collected. It was decided thao the eubsidy be applied for, aud suitable premises endeavoured to be obtained and the school started as early as possible. Students of Tbuth.—Mr Worthington will lecture at the Temple of Truth tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Our Father's Chukch.—The programme for the meeting of our Father's Church at the Art Gallery, to-morrow, appeals elsewhere.
