Bryant (18), and John, Daffie (16), were charged with stealing from the steamer Te Anau a case of plums valued, at 10a, the property of W. Cook. The' accused pleaded' '* Not guilty." The evidence of J. . Sparks, second officer* and , ; Chan. L&waon, A.B. on board the steamer, was to the effect that- they aaw Doffl> take the plums out of a ease he lhad opened, and , hand tbem dowa in another case to the i'-- : three other boys, who were in a bpat astern.' ' of the steamer. When they saw they were noticed ttaffle slid down a rope into .the boat, and they threw the plums overboard and pulled away. Constable Heather and McCqrmack gave evidence. Sergeant Butledge handed in a< long list of previous ; oonviotione. Koekella and" Bryant were ' * discharged with a caution. Daffle ana Mft« Rae were each fined 8s and costs or in default four days , imprisonment.
