THE REGATTA.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January^ There was splendid weather for the holiday, and the streets were almost deserted. Despite the regatta, large numbers went out by the trains. Besides the regatta and races, the Friendly Societies had a sports meeting on the Basin Reserve, which was fairly attended. The annual regatta, under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, was held to-day, and proved to be one of the most successful gatherings in the history of the Club. The win of the Waitangi in the bi« event was very popular, aud Logan, her builder, who steered her in the race, received a great ovation as he crossed the | line at the finish, the enthusiasm being renewed when the Bona, the winner of the second class championship, which was I also built by Logan, drew up alongside j the Waitangi, and the two boats sailed away together to their moorings, j It was very evident the wind was far too i light to allow of the Mascotte showing the excellent sailing qualities she undoubtedly possesses. The sailiug of the Napier boat in the second class race was very much admired, and regret was expressed that she could not be awarded the first money. It is understood that she i 3 under offer to j a Wellington syndicate, her owner being desirous of securing a larger boat. Mee's (Wellington) Maritana, 13 rating, lmin 24sec .~ ... 4 All the boats came up to the flagship with their kites on, Maritana and the two Lyttelton yachts carrying club topsails, and the Aucklander the ordinary jib header. When the gun fired there was a dead calm, and the boats lay almost motionless off the starting point. In about half-an-hour, however, a gentle breeze sprang up from the south, and the boats were off at a fair pace, the wind freshening as they made towards the entrance of the harbour. Passing Point Halswell, about four miles from the Queen's wharf, Pastime, which had caught the breeze first, was in front, about two minutes ahead of Waitangi, which was a similar distance in front of Mascotte, Maritana lying last. On the beat to Worser ABay Waitangi exhibited splendid pace, and, passing Pastime, assumed a strong lead, Mascotte also coming up and displacing Pastime. On rounding the buoy for the run from Worser Bay to the buoy off Petone, Waitangi wa3 four minutes in front of Mascotte, which had barely a minute from Pastime, Maritana being hopelessly in the rear. If anything Waitangi increased her lead on the run to Petone, while Pastime crept up on Mascotte until there was very little distance between them. On the beat from Petone to the Queen's wharf buoy, completing the first round of the course, Waitangi increased her lead rounding the buoy about ten minutes ahead of Mascotte. Pastime had fallen to the rear, and was some minutes behind Maritana. The first round was completed as follows: —Waitangi, lhr 57min 50 sec; Mascotte, 2hrs 9min ; Maritana, 2hrs 15min saeo ; Pastime, 2hrs 19min. On the run to Worser Bay for the second time, the Waitangi increased her lead by about six minutes, and, sailing splendidly, crossed the line an easy winner at 4hra 59min 52sec. The Mascotte, which was three or four miles behind her, finished at shra 27min 29dec. The Pastime and the Maritana finished close together shortly before six o'clock, the former having the advantage. Isca at lhr 39min ssec, and the Mapu at lhr 42min. From this out jthe Atalanta maintained her lead and crossed the line at 4hr smin, exactly a minute in front) of the Rona, which was lZmin ahead of the boa. . The first prize was awarded to the Rona, the Napier boat being disqualified for having carried a larger mainsail that she was rated for. The Third Class Yacht Race was won by the Ir^s. Several other events for smaller craft were got off during the'day. A handicap race for all yachts, irrespective of size, will be sailed on Saturday over the championship course. It is probable that all the yachts taking part in, to-day'a regatta will compete.
