WESTPORT.

"Weekly Press." January 11. The total quantity of coal exported from the Westporc mines during 1891 amounted to £30,636 tons 12 cwt, of which 215,770 tons 12cwt were front the Weatiport Coal Company's Mine, 10,866 tons from the Moklhinui Coal Company's, and 4,009 tons from the Weistport-Cardiff Company's. The Westporb Coal Company's total Iβ 7930 tons below that of lant year, but this still leaves an increase of 6936 tons on the gross total for the port. The amount for December wa* v unusually/email, only 12,709 tons 12 cwt, all from the Westport Coal Compauy's Mine. .The two men injured by thecannon accident on New Year's Eve are both getting on favourably. Captain Patterson, who had two ribs fractured is going about again, but Mr Howard, who had hie arm broken and the flesh much lacerated, is still in the hospital.- A concert was held last evening in the Palace Rink on behalf of Mr Howard, which was one of the most successful and beet attended entertainments ever held in Westport. The audience is said to have been the largest that ever assembled for such a purpose here, and the net proceeds amounted to nearly £50. After the concert a ball was hsld, in which overloo couples took part. At a meeting of the Naval Volunteers, held a few evenings ago. Mr Costogrove stated that he would resign his position. !as captain of ttje Corps, in consequent of ! the catastrophe on New Year's eve. The men strongly objected to Mr Coasgrove's taking such a step, and urged him to wait until word was received from headquarters. Lieutenant Gothard also notified that- he would resign after the annual meeting. It Is to Tie hoped both will remain in their positions, or the. Naval Volunteer movement here, which has been progressing so rapidly since Captain Cossgrove took it in charge, will be sure to suffer. It has been discovered by inspection of the fragments found that the cannon which burst must have been in a cracked state for a long time* but this could not have been noticed beforehand, as it was getting dark before they thought of fetching it out on the fatal .occasion. Mr Mabin, late of the Bank of New South Wales, Westport, and who has just been transferred to Christchurch, was entertained to a farewell dance last Friday evening, in the Princes* Theatre here. There was a large and representative attendance. During * the evening, Mr I Munro, on behalf of" the Harmonic Society, presented Mr Mabin with a gold pencil case, and' Mr Harden, on, behalf of other friends, presented him with r. handsome inkstand. Mr Mabin has been six years-resident here, and will be missed in church, musical, athletic, and social circles generally.
