(PBBSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, January 21. A fire at Otahuhu burned two cottages owned by Mr Alexander Mathews. They were insured for £300 in the Royal office. NAPIER, January 21. An important case waa decided in the Magietrate'6 Court to-day, when Police Coua cable Gordon obtained judgment against S. Northe for £100 damages with coats for injuries inflicted through a collision which occurred while a servant of the defendant was driving without lights on the wrong side of the road. WELLINGTON, January 21. ThegElon. Mr Ward wiites to the Times that he asked for the Postal Conference to be fixed , at Hobarfc, in order that he might meet other Ministers there who would then be at the Federal Council. At the same time he informed the Postmaster-General of Victoria that he waa going on to Melbourne, and could attend there if the Conference could not be held at Hobart. The other colonies, however, considerately fixed the date and place to suit him. The following tenders were received for the Sunnyside Asylum Boilers' contract: — Accepted, George Scott, Chrislchurch, £585; declined, J. and A. Andetson, Chriatchurch, £640. . DC7NEDIN, January 21. It iff intended to give a banquet to Mr Ward at the end of the week.
Sir R. Stout contends that the logical outcome of allowing the Board's Inspectors to inspect the Catholic schools must be State intervention to see that teachers are efficient. The State has no right to inspect except as a duty. The agreement or nonagreement of managers does not settle the question of duty.
