FATAL TRAMWAY ACCIDENT.
A fatal accident happened on the New Brighton Tramway Company's line on Saturday morning to a boy aged about thirteen, named Willie Cowper, son of Mr Cpwper, newsagent at Brighton. The eleven o'clock tram from Christchurch was just about to pull up on arrival ac its destination, when the boy jumped on to the platform of the front car with the view of ascertaining if there was a parcel there. Not getting one he' jumped out at the other side aud fell. Tne car passed over his left leg and arm, crushing both badly, also injuring his right leg aud arm. The boy it is said had been in the habit of jumping on and oft' the cars in this way, and had been warned against doing so. Dr. Kussell, who happened to be at New Brighton, was called, and he attended to the boy's injuries. The boy was then placed on a car and brought to Cbristchurch. The car was met by Sergeant Briggs, with the ambulance streccher from the police station, and Cowper was removed to the Hospital. The leg and arm most severely injured were subsequently amputated, the boy standing the operation wonderfully well. He gradual!/ sank, however, and died.at 10 p.m. on Saturday. An enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident will, be held at the Hospital at 9 a.m. to-day.
