At the finish of the election the Socialists shook their fists iv the faces of their opponents, and owing to the uproar it was impossible to hear the speeches. *M. Faure is the first Protestant elected head of the State. M. Dupuy, the Premier, has resigned. After his election, SI. Faure said he would cease to belong to a party, and would become the arbiter of parties without distinction. The Times thinks the result of the election will be a happy one for France and will reassure every one. The Socialists loudly resented the prohibition of Richard from voting. A section of the party clamoured " Down with the Presidency." The moderate journals are favourable to tbe new President, but the .Radicals and Socialists denounce him as a mere figure-head. '
