OAMARU.
December 31. I fear I cannot give a fully detailed account; of the various social functions that hare taken place during the pasfc week. I have been ebutu for a little holiday, aud though I enjoyed myself immensely, I am not sorry to return to the white stone city, especially whilst we are enjoying sach charming weather. On Thursday the 23ih, a large and most successful riding party was held, about thirty riders and a coneiderable number In buggies taking part. The weather was fine and the r.mte taken was that along the beach to Kakanui and home by way of Maheno. Amongst those present were Mrs Burbary, Mrs De Latour, Mrs Altken, the Misses Menlove, Backley, Murdoch, Reid. Newton, Miller, Messrs Burbury, Bain, Darling, R>xby, Aitken. Newton, Roll, Harvey, and many others.
On Saturday, the 22nd, Mrs Holmes gave a garden party at Awanioa. The weather wa« again beautifully fine, and the lovely grounds were seen at their best. A very large number of guests were present. On Christmas morning a carol service was held in St. Luke's at eight o'clock. The church was most tastefully decorated, and the new altar cloth and hangings and brass vases which have just arrived from England added greatly to the general effect. The choir «ang splendidly, and Mr Towsey ia deserving of all praise for the immense improvement he has effected during the short time he has been choirmaster. On Friday evening the 28th Mrs Gilchrisfc entertained a nunaber of guests at a musical, which later ou resolved itself into a moat enjoyable dance. While iv Dunedin I went to the opera and saw Ma Mie Rosette. Miss Nelly Stewart is a* charming as ever, and .Lauri and Vernon have lost nothing of their fun-making abilities. What a treat a visit from such a company would be to playgoers in Oarnaru, , but I fear the chances are remote. The Oamaru cricket team, which visited Dunedin .during the holiday, seems to have been irresistible, winning the three matches played. I notice that some of the country players, notably Messrs R. Gillies, J. Borcon and Pochin scored the best. The Tennis Tournament at the* Reed street court is proceeding, and I hope to be able to give some results next week. I believe a ladies' tournament Is also on the tapis. Rhea.
