Buch absences, in accordance with clause 7, Education Act, 1894, which provides that a child under thirteen years of age must be sent to school six times during each week the school is open nine times, subject to a penalty of 2s per week for non-attendance, to go to school funds. The case was proved by Captain S. H. Willis, Chairman of the School Committee, and Mr J. McGregor, head master. The Bench referred to the ■ prevalence of children staying away from school, and expressed their pleasure ; at the case having been brought, as it j would prove a lesson to parents that they could not allow their children to stay away from school with impunity. Free education was provided by the Government at great cost to the country, aud the children must be sent. In this case, however, they j would not deal hardly with defendant, but would record a conviction, tbe defendant to come up for judgment when called upon. Deliveeikg Tobacco to Prisoners.—J. Roberts, alias Watson, alias Foley, alias Harrison, alias Upton, pleaded guilty to endeavouring to deliver tobacco to prisoners contrary to section 35 of the Prisons Act, 1882. The offence was proved by M. M. Cleary, Governor of the Gaol, and Thomas Blatchford, warder, aud defendant was fined £5, or in default one month's imprisonment. Opportunity. —C. H. COMPLAINTS having been made as to the administration of the North Canterbury and Ashburton United Charitable Aid Board, more particularly as regards cruelty of officers of the Board in refusing assistance in deserving cases, the extravagance of the Board in the scale of salaries paid to its officers and its parsimony in dealing with old, sick and unfortunate people; and as to the conduct of the Inspector of the Board in acting immorally towards some of those who asafor, or are in receipt of aid, his Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint Commissioners to examine, inquire into, and report upon the said complaints.
