THE CABLE GUARANTEE FUND.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEORAM.)
WELLINGTON, November 29.
The Victorian Post Office has written to the Postmaster-General of New Zealand intimating its intention to withdraw from contributing to the cable guarantee fund, nnder which the present low rates for European and intercolonial messages are maintained. Mr Ward, in replying, strongly urges reconsideration, pointing out that should Victoria withdraw the other colonies would be compelled to do the same, with the result that cable rates would be increased to something like the former high tariff, to the serious inconvenience of the public and general business. Mr Ward has also asked the Postmaster-General of South Australia to confer with ths other colonies to dissuade Victoria from withdrawing.
The amount paid by Victoria under the cable guarantee, from which that colony is thinking of withdrawing, is £4503. New Zealand pays £6234.
