SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday morning. Present—Mr D. McMillan (Chairman), and Messrs J. Bennie, W. Boag, J. Gough, A. Wiffen,F.C. Moiray, H. W. Peryman, and \Y. Dnnlop. An apolo&y for absence was received from Mr Westenra.
The Chairman stated that since the last meeting correspondence had been received from the Lincoln Road Board for a grant in aid of roads and drains ; from the Heathcote and Riccarton Road; Boards applying for grants for main roads; from Mr O'Malley, forwarding list of traffic at Bealey Ferry; from the Auditor-General forwarding audited balance sheet; for half-year ending 30th September; from the Malvern and Riccarton Road Boards, forwarding accounts for the "purchuse of small birds; report from Mr East on Neili Bros.' contract for the Etlesniere drainage works ; report of Slaughterhouse Inspector. The first business was the notice of motion by
engineer to report npou n. proposed drain at Luke EHesmere. It would be necessary to elect four members of the Hospital and four members of the Charitable Aid Boards, It was decided that one of the Board's own officer's should furnish a report on the proposed drainage works at Ellersmere. On the motion of Messrs Mcrrav and PfißTiiAK the Lincoln Road Board were grauted £100, in compliance with their request.
The Heathcote Roa4 Board was granted £150, in aid of the cost of maintenance ot the Opawa, Heathcote, and Woodham main roads.
An application was made by the Riccarton Road Board for a grant for the mam roads, aud Messrs Boao aud Resit IE moved that £200 be granted. The motion was negatived, and Mr Boag moved to reopen the matter. The return of traffic at the Bealey Ferry showed that ia the last nine montU3 the ferryman had received 16s. Some small amounts were refunded to Boards in respect of the small birds nuisance.
Reports from the Inspector of the Halswell Drainage Works and the Inspector of Slaughterhouses were received. Accounts amounting to £537 15s 5d were passed for payment, after which the Council Adjourned.
The annual meeting of the Council was held at 12 o'clock for the election of Chairman.
MrH. W. Pertman moved the re-elec-tion of Mr McMillan, than whom none was better fitted, both mentally and physically, to fill the position. Mr Dcnlop.,seconded the motion and said tnat whileMr McMillan conducted the business in the gentlemanly and courteous way, so characteristic of him, it would be a great mistake to make a change. The motion wan eupported by Messrs Rennie, Murray, Boag, Wiffeu and Gough. Mr McMillan* acknowledged the election. He alluded to the courtesy and support members accorded him, and very fully recognised the admirable way in whicn Mr Jameson discharged his duties and assisted the Chairman. He also referred satisfactorily to the other officers of the Council. -t, _
