The Labour p*rty opposed the motion for au Intercolonial Conference to bring about the free interchange of colonial products and manufactures on the ground that the alien labour iv Queensland Was a menace to the whole of Australia, and, further, that intercolonial free trade at present would be disastrous to the Adelaide manufacturers. The. motion was amended in the direction of referring it to a Conference. The question of the amalgamation and consolidation of intercolonial loans was carried by 26 to 10, the Labour party forming the minority. Hobart, October 25. The second reading of the Assessment Bill was carried by 19 to 13. The question eventually became one of want of confidence, and considerable party feeling was shown. The Bill was eventually passed.through all its stages, bub it is now certain the Council will reject it.
