LIVE AND LET LIVE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS.

Sir, —The thanks of the community art due to the unknown author of the leaflet "Live and Let Live," which was circulated with your issue of Saturday last. I know of many employers of labour who have had to turn hands adrift owing t) their profits being so reduced by the action of those who keep on cutting down prices. And how do outting establishments sell so cheap ? (1) Having beaten the producer down to a starvation price, they also cut then* expenditure down to bed rock—rent, w&gea rates, gas and cost of packing—somethinj* must be still further reduced. The only one of these which can be further curtailed is wages, and this thoy will cut down to the lowest possible figure fa the longest possible number of hoari, notwithstanding legislation. (2) All sort* of dodges are resorted to to deludi tbe publio. For instance, packing ia V thick cardboard package, wliich is weighed in, so that a half-pound package contain., only 7oz. of merchandise, cardboard being infinitely less costly than contents" (if of good marketable quality), the public do nob geb such a very cheap bargain aftst all, &c. The closing remarks of the ••'leaflet)*' referred to .re worthy of repetition in large type:—"Unions should insist upon their members supporting fair traders only, if they wish to keep the Union —Yours truly, :'- >v r*|, -■-'■ M__t»_A«t*^; ; :
