PLAYING THE GHOST.

About a quarter to eleven ''o'clock last night Mr A. J. DoMaua, who is employed in the Lyttelton Times , office, was assaulted on the North: belt by a young fellow who waa aupposed to' be acting the ghost. Mr DeMaus was walking with several lady friends along the footpath near the Presbyterian Churoli. The ladies noticed a white cloth fluttering under one of the trees at the end of the avenue, and they became frightened. Mr DeMaua went over to the tree, as he thought that someone was playing the ghost. He found a young fellow crouched behind the tree, but tho cloth was then bidden. Without saying anything Mr DoMaus turned to rejoin the ladies, when the young fellow and a companion, who was behind another tree, began to make some personal remarks. Mr DeMaus went to the former and remonstrated with him on hia foolish conduct. The young fellow became impertinent, and Mr DeMaua set about chastising him, bat was struck on the side of the head with a stick or atone and rendered partially unconscious. The ladies then ran up and the two young fellows bolted. Mr DeMaus was, however, able to identify the one to whom he spoke. The police were at once com*municated with, and Chief-Detective O'Connor set about making enquiries, which it is to be hoped will result in an example being made of at least one of those who are subjecting people to annoyance and alarmthrough playing the ghost.
