EAST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL.

The annual swimming competition among the girls of the East Christchureh school took place in the the school bath on Tuesday. The swimming instructor, Mr W. Garrard, superintended the proceedings. The following gained the highest number of points in tho various competitions :— Learners on apparatus —Eva Kuight 1, Nellie Hammond 2. Swimming with belt— Florence Munnings 1, Annie Geddes 2. Swimming width of bath—Ellen Menzies 1, Elsis Harris 2. Learners' race, 25 yards— Gertrude Walker 1, May Brunsden 2, Ada ; Alfrey 3. 25 yards race, open to all—Septima Macgregor 1, Jessie Macgregor 2, Kate Hunsley 3. Diving—Maud Harris 1, May Black 2. There were several entries for the life-saving competition, but the result cannot be declared for a few days, when the competitors will be examined as to their knowledge of the Humane Society's method and rules for restoring life. The marks gained in this examination will, when added to the swimming marks, decide the result. The swimming this year showed a great improvement over previous years. The annual swimming races among the boys attending the East Christchureh School took place yesterday afternoon. Mr J. G. L. Scott, headmaster of the school, acted as starter and judge.
