The Fair. — Elsewhere will be found notifications of the sale of sheep at the annual Ram Fair on the 15th inßt. by J_r E. G. Staveley, Pyne and Co., F. C. Tabart, J. T. Ford and Co., Miles and Co., limited, New Zealand Laud Association, Limited, Todhunter and Jennings, and New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association. The entries for the fair are exceedingly large, and as some have yet to come in _y mail, the totals in the various classes are not yet ascertainable. The Conference Lecture. —The Wesleyan Conference lecture for this year will be delivered on Monday evening next by the Rev. J. S. Smalley on "The Second Advent." The Conference yesterday, in opposition to the recommendation of the Committee, elected a layman, Mr W. Harding, to the office for next year, and chose as the subject "Methodist Hymnology." It was made to be clearly understood thaji while the Conference selected both lecturer aud subject, the views expressed would be those of the lecturer. The Licensing Election. —A remarkable meeting took place yesterday at the V.M.C.A. Hall. It was convened by three ministers to consider what steps should be taken by those who desire to see a reduction of licensed houses. But the prohibitionists came up in great force and ruled the meeting to such an extent that the Chairman — the Bishop of Christchurch— had to lay down the rule that no one could speak except the proposer- and seconders of the resolutions, aud that no vote would be taken against the resolutions. The Bishop also made a statement in answer to an article in the Press. The meeting ultimately broke up without the second resolution being put. "Canterbury Chess Club. —A special general meeting of the Canterbury Chess Club was held last evening. There were about twenty-five members present, and Mr Hookham presided. The question __ of tourneys for the coming winter was discussed, aud on the motion of Mr Spiller, seconded by Mr Anderson, it wa3 deoided to hold a Handicap Tourney of the whole Club, the handicaps to be according to the present status of members, lb was also decided that the rate of play be eighteen moves au hour,..ond that the gomes should count as status games. It was resolved, on the motion, oi Mr Eyre, that any player being absent ten times during the progress of the tourney should be disqualified. In addition to the tourney it was agreed to set aside one night a month for sides matches. Licensing Committee. —The ordinary quarterly meeting of the Temuka Licensing Committee was held on Friday at the Courthouse, Temuka. The inspector's report on licensed houses was favourable and all. renewals were granted. Mr A. M. Clark moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman, Mr J. Talbot, for the efficient manner in which he had rilled his position for the post term of office, and expressed a hope that he would occupy the chair again upon the next Committee. Mr Talbot, in returning thanks, said the duties had been lightened by the good conduct of licensees, and whatever might be the result of the working of the new Act he trusted that ib would not be any worse. Wesleyan' Conference. —This body met in open session three. times yesterday, and , ttt lor over ten hours, A large amount of business was disposed of, including the reception and passing of several notices of . motion. It was decided to hold the next Conference at Nelsou. The representatives ! to the General Conference to be held at Adelaide in May next, were chosen, ten, ministers and twelve laymen. Of the latter j •even are from the Canterbury circuits, two frora Auckland, and oue each from Nelson «nd Otago. The Conference resumes at 8.30 j am. today, when the important subject of ! Australian News. — Some interesting items of Australian news, supplied by our special correspondents, will be fouud in another column. The Wreck of the Owakb Belle. — The ketch Owake Belle, which was wrecked at the Kaiapoi bar recently, remains in the same position as before. A good part of the cargo has been recovered aud removed. Tenders are now invited for the purchase of the hull. r Theatre Royal.—The Marian Willis company repeated "Uncle Tom's Cabin" last night at the Theatre Royal, and will give it at a matinee to-day. To-night, which i 3 the last performance of the season, " Fennel" will be repeated. Harper Memorial.—Messrs E. Wheeler and Sou have very kindly taken an excellent photograph of the design prepared by Mr B. W. Mountforb of the gateway and statue proposed to be erected in memory of the late Biahop Harper, of whom a very good likeness has ingeniously been pioduced in the statue. The photographs will be exhibited in the windows of several of our citizens who will be pleased to receive subscriptions. As the gateway will not only be a memorial to the Bishop, but a great ornament to the city, it is trusted the public will promptly and liberally respond to the Committee's appeal, enabling them to at once put the work of erection in hand.
