Takapuna arrived yesterday morning from Onehuuga, via Taranaki and Wellington, and returned iv the evening. A good many of the Northern riflemen who have been attending the Association Meeting at Hillsborough, returned to their homes last night by the steamers Waira- , rapa and Takapuna. ; The Union Company's a. a. Wairarspa, Captain John Mcintosh, from Melbourne, at rived here at 7 a.m. yesterday. She left on the 27th nit. at 5.15 p.m., arriving at Bluff , at 6.30 p.m. on the sth. Left next day at ' 5 p.m., called at Dunedin the next day, leaving again on the 7th, and arriving as ! above. Experienced strong S.W. west winds and considerable sea from Melbourne to Bluff, thence moderate winds till arrival. H.M.S. Orlando was thrown open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m., yesterday, and a large number of people took advantage of the opportunity to visit the flagship. There is a first-class brass band on board, and a great many people visit the wharf in the evening to listen to the music discoursed. The vessel is a great attraction to the public, and as she lies at the wharf the ' operations of those on board are closely scrutinised by a crowd of onlookers. The Timaru Harbour Board's dredge No. 404 arrived yesterday morning, from Timaru for docking. The craft looks anything but an inviting one in which to make ' the trip from England to this colony, and ' her appearance is not improved by her want of paint. She will no doubt look better ' on coming out of dock. Like all dredges 1 of her class she is a mass of machinery. The dock was being prepared for her and she will be floated in to-day.
