The Lee3ton Wesleyan Church held a social reunion in the Town Hall, Leeston, on Tuesday night, to give the Ellesmere people an opportunity to meet and welcome amongst them again their former ministers, the Revs. T. Brooke, W. Keall, and J. A. Luxford. The Rev. Mr Parsonson occupied the chair, and on behalf of those present and of the district extended a hearty welcome to their old friends who had left the Conference to meet them. A strong choir, under the leadership of the Rev. Mr Parsonson, gave several glees very nicely, and Miss Lunn sang a solo. The visitors gave appropriate addresses, and during the evening refreshments were handed round. The Chairman apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Rev. Mr Standage. Mr Lomas, local Agent of the Labour Department, has received instructions to select ten carpenters, three bricklayers, and one bricklayer's labourer, to carry out certain alterations to the Christchurch police station. The men will be selected on Saturday morning at ten o'clock. The work is to be done on the co-operative system. The race which was to have been sailed lost Saturday for prizes presented by Mr James Shand and the Club was postponed until March 17th, owing to the absence of any wind. During the Easter Volunteer camp it is intended to give an entertainment in aid of the St. Stephen's Maori School, near Kaiapoi, at which the patronage of the Volunteer officers has been promised. The cause of the hre alarm on Wednesday evening was owing to some person having broken the glass of the alarm opposite St. Luke's Church, Manchester street. Yesterday morning about 5.30 Constable Bailey took the horse found in the" river to the pound. The animal, which is in a very poor and weak condition, did not appear to be able to move at a very quick pace, and when within a short distance, actually lay down from exhaustion. The constable, by coaxing, managed to get the horse on its feet again, but not before it had bitten him on the arm. The animal was eventually conveyed as far as the pound, where it now may be claimed.
