LICENSING COMMITTEES.
SOUTH-EAST WARD. The quarterly meeting of tho South-East Licensing District was held at noon yesterday. Present— Messrs J. P. Jameson (presiding), C. P. Hulbert, and F. Trent. The transfer of the license of the Al Hotel from C. Amyes to C. Kiiugenstein was granted. Mr Byrne, on behalf of Mr Klingenstein, asked that permission be given to put out the street light at 10 p.m. on Sunday; nights. The matter was deferred until next meeting. A transfer of the license of TattersaU'a Hotel, from W. H. Christie to J. Barritt, was granted. Mc Loughrey, on behalf of the new licensee, made a similar request regarding putting out lignts at ten o'clock. The Chaibman said he waa fully in sympathy with those who wished to put tho street lamps out at 10 o'clock instead of 11 on Sunday nigbts, but considered ib would be better to defer the matter until tho annual meeting in June. Mr Hulbert supported the application. Ultimately it was decided to leave the matter undecided until the annual meeting in June. The police reported favourably upon all hotels in the district and the meeting adjourned. •
It is understood that the following havo consented to be nominated as candidates for the RangiUta Licensing Committee:— Messrs T. Sealey and D. Thomas (Tinwald), McQuilkin (Longbeach), D. McLean (Lagmhor), Orbell and A. White (Geraldine), Iben and Dennistoun (Peel Forest). (PKKSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS. \ AUCKLAND, March 7. It is probable that tlie Temperance party will nominate, amongst others—Messrs J. Smith, jun , G. B. Morrison, N. Dodgshun, and Dr. Deale, in the coming elections for VVellingtoDi HOKITIKA, Marcb.7. The West Coast Times says that the Returning Officer has pointed out to the local body having control a contradiction in section 17, sub-section 4, of the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control, and the third schedule made under section 16 of the Act. Subsection 4 says:—" If a voter fails to erase two lines in each proposal, the ballot paper is void.' . The third schedule says:— " Voting iv respect of such proposal only is void. ,. He holds that sab-eection 4 most override the schedule. The local bodies referred the matter to their solicitor, who confirms the opinion of the Returning Officer, and he has been directed accordingly. It is understood the other three Returning Officers on the Coast hold differ* ent views, and will be guided by Uio third schedule.
