Adelaide, is very slight. MEDIEVAL LAWS. Cardinal Moran, in tbe course of a speech, said he favoured a return to the mediaeval laws prohibiting a man to hold more than 300 acres of land or receive more than 5 per cent, interest on money lent. DEATHS BY DROWNING. Eleven lives were lose in various parts of New South Wale- yesterday by drowning. Through the capsizing of a puut at Nyngan fovfr Chinamen were drowned, while two women were drowned at Hay in a similar manner. THE VICTORIAN DEFICIT. Melbourne, February 26. The deficit for the current year is estimated at £270,000. THE BOARD OF WORKS LOAN. The Metropolitan Beard of Works loan is unfavourably viewed in financial circles, and it is thought thab with I money so plentiful in London, the loan would be more easily floated on the English market. BAYLEY'S REWARD CLAIM, The shareholders iv Bay ley's Reward claim at Coolgardie have decided to wind up affairs and form a new company under the Limited Liability Act, which can be placed on the register of tbe London Slock Exchange. The > capital of the new company will be [ £480,000, and shares will be divided pro rata amongst the present share- ■ holders. I CLAIM AGAINST THE VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT. Melbournb, February 26. The Government of Tasmania has preferred a claim of several thousaud pounds against the Victorian Government for the latter:* share in keeping Bass Straits lighthouse in repair. The claim came upon tite Victorian Cabinet aa a complete surprise, and "the Premier, Mr Patterson, intends to remit the matter to the Intercolonial Conference on lighthouses which meets at Hobart in April next. GREAT DROUGHT IN QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, February 26. The country round the Charlesville terminus of the Great Western railway, eighty-three miles inland from Brisbane is in a deplorable condition owing to drought. The stock ia dying in large numbers, and unless rain falls shortly the selectors will be forced to abandon their holdings. RICH GOLD DISCOVERY. Adelaide, February 26. A rich gold discovery has beea made near "Waukariuga, 225 miles inland. A portion of the lode submitted to assay yielded seventy ounces per ton.
