DRY ROT IN TIMBER.

TO THB EDITOR OF THE PRES3. Sir, —From observations I should say that the present season has been rather avourable for the increase of dry rot as it s called in the timber used in builJing, paricularlyin the katiikabaa {podocarpus dacryioides) otherwise white pine. Few houses re fre3 from' some timber in which the borings ol a small beetle may be noticed, and the insects produce little heaps of fine sawdust, These become ia time so da .tructive that rafters and beams become dangerous. I believe tbe time of catting of tbe timber has something to do wit* the propagation ol the insects, and I have beeu told that washing timber affected with carbolic acid will destroy the pest. I should be glad to know if any of your readers can give mc any information on this point. I may say I have used paint and kerosene without effect.—Yours, See., Householder.
