DUNEDIN DEPUTATIONS TO THE HON. J. G. WARD.

DUNEDIN, February 1. A deputation from the City Council «rsited on the Hon. J. G. Ward, and urged ,£at the new gaol should be erected outside tiecity. The Minister promised to bring ihe matter before hi 3 colleagues. For him«elf he said he did Dot think it was a good thing to have the gaol in the centre of the eitj- , . The deputation also brought forward the matter oi the electric tramway, which was discussed at some length. lhe Minister said he hoped to have the •eport of two experfs from Australia before the end of the month. The Government irere only desirous oi protecting the public interests. They had no money available to change the present telephone system. Later on a deputation of citizens, including the city and suburban memberssraited on Mr Ward to urge the granting of a concession to the Tramway Company. Ia the course of his reply the Minister said the object of the Government was to prevent the incurring of unnecessary expenditure, but if the report of the experts thowed that the telephone system coulu not De worked with the single trolly system of ' electric tramways, then the necessary alterations to the telephone system would be undertaken.
