NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

The presentation by the Countese of Glasgow of the certificates of the Canterbury Centre of the St. John Ambulance Association will take place in the City Council Chambers this evening at eight o'clock.

A meeting of the Working Men ? s Cooperative Society will be held at the Oddfellows' Chambers to-morrow at 7.30 p.m., to receive the report and balauce-sbeet, elect officers, &c.

A meeting of the Sydenham Prohibition League will be held in the Wesleyan Schoolroom this evening at 7.30. In connection with the heresy hunting case of the Rev. S. J. Xeill, of Auckland, addresses of sympathy with the rev. gentleman are being largely signed in all the principal cities ol the colony. Those sent here for signature have besn signed very numerously by all classes and sects.

Mr W. W. Collins lectured lass evening in the Tuam street Hall, the subject being " The Development of Plant Life" illustrated with the aid of the osy-ether lantern, manipulated by Mr A. H. P. Noble; Mr James Hale, of Tasmania, took the chair.

The annual meeting of subscribers of the Methven Library was held on January 3th. There was a small attendance. The balaues sheet showed the balance in hand £11 6s lid; rents and subscriptions outstanding, £11 15s ; liabilities, £11 11s. It was decided to enforce more strictly the rule that members in arrears with subscriptions be nol allowed to take out books. The number of books in the library is 690. The following were appointed a Committee for the ensuing year:—W. Morgan, Chairman ; G. VV. Alington, Secretary ; J. Baker, J. Batty, A. Dnbbs, J. Gillanders, and Captain Thackeray. A vote of thanks was passed to the Secretary and the Librariau. A meeting was held in the Ashburton County Council Chambers on Friday, to consider matters in connection with the comiug licensing elections for the Ashburton and Rangitata districts. The date for the Raugitata election was fixed for Wednesday, March 21st. : ,

■On Friday evening a meeting of the Rangiora Bicycle Ciub was held at the Junction Hotel. Mr J. Sansom in the chair. It was decided to institute three races for the Bth, 15th and 22nd February for one mile, three miles and five miles for prizes given by Mr E. R. Good (President), the Mayor, and another trophy to be competed for in handicaps, the races to be open and held on the Recreation Ground at Rangiora.

On Tnursday the effects at the Flaxton Dairy Factory were sold by auction, and for the mo3t part were purchased for the Raugiora factory. Oα Friday evening last the Christchurch Working "Men's Club Riae Class fired off another stage of No. 4 competition for prizes presented by Messrs Ward and Co., Wood Bros., Wells, and class prizes, seven shots each at 200yUs, with following result ■:—Scott (scr) 35, Wells (scr) 34, W. Garrard (2), 34, Alien (2) 34, Frost (scr) 33, Caldwell (1) 33, Marklaud (3) 33, Sherwood (scr) 32, Turpiu (scr) 32, Hastie (scr)- 32, Muhford (1) 32... On Saturday a member's prize was-fired for, and won by J. Garrard with a score (3) "34. ' ■ ..

The auuual race in connection with the Union Rowing Club, fop the Trial Double Sculls, took place on the Avon oa Saturday afternoon. The Captain, Mr F. D. Keateven, acted as starter. The first heat between G. Stevensou (bow) L. Harrison (stroke) and J. Smith (bow) A. B. Charters (stroke), was a splendid race for half a mile, but ou roundiug Cowlishaw's corner Charter's coxswain steered to his wrong side of the river and fouled the opposing crew; the race was awarded Harrison by the Judge. The second heat, between J. Morrison (bow) C. Wells (stroke), and F. Mitchell <bow) L. Machin (stroke), was won r&ther easily by* the latter, the crew rowing well together. The final heat between Harrison and Machin produced a splendid race. For threequarters of a mile the crews rowed neck and neck, neither having any advantage, then the latter gradually drew away and finally won a well contested race by two lengths. The display of fireworks at New Brighton is announced to take place tins evening, when excursion trams will be run. The Engineers , Band will play the following programme on the pier : — Grand slow march, "King Christmas'" (H. Bound); overture, "The Sentinel" (H. R. Callcott); valsette, "Mellina" (F. J. Richardson); quadrille, "Jolly Girls"" (T. Dawson); polka, "Jolly Fellows" (Wilbrich) ; fantasia, " Memories of Scotland " (E J ward Newton); valse, " lolanthe " (Sir Arthur Sullivan); schottische, "Golden Hours " (Linter) ; caprice (petit), " Meditation" (EL Round); galop, " Climax.'' (Linter).

The Union Rowing Club have just received from Wellington a racing fo,ur : oared outrigger, built by George Norton, the wellknown boat-builder of that city. The boat is a splendid specimen of boat-building, being light -but strong;, and containing the latest improvements. Altogether the new addition to the Club fleet is fully equal to anything yet imported from England. One of - the features in connection with the Union Rowing Club is that they always encourage local industry in the matter of building boats.

The services of the Central Mission yesterday were well attended, especially in the eveniDg, when the Oddfellows' Hall was tilled. Pastor Birch 'delivered an impressive address on "Conversion: what i& is and'hqw obtained." During the evening a quartette was sung by Misses Lawrence and Messrs Brown and Ford, and Mr Sorrell sang a solo, "Come unto mc." The class for young men was successfully started yesterday aiternoon.

The Cbristchurch Pigeon Flying Club flaw off a race from Amberley en Saturday. Twenty-one birds competed. Owing to unfavourable weather, they made a slow velocity, the winner being Mr Green'a Little Wonder, with a velocity of 830 yards per minute. The Club desires to thank the station master for liberating the birds. The following are the placed ones:—Mr J. Green's Little Wonder, 830 yds per miv ; Mr R. Cook's Cajolery, 725 yds per mm ; Mr T. Phillips's Liberator, 613 yds per mm ; Mr A. Gapes'a Spiral, 610 yds per rain; Mr A. Gerard sMerivale, 608 yds per mm. A general meeting of the employees of the Kaiapoi' Clothing Factory was held on Friday last, to discuss the question; of holding the annual picnic. A preliminary Committee had been, appointed previously, with the object of making enquiries re place of picnic, &c. A ballot was taken previous to the meeting, and resulted in Little River being chosen as the place for this year's outing. It was decided that it should take place on Saturday, February 10th. The following Committee were elected to carry out the arrangements :— Mr T. Wilson (Chairman), Mesdames Tattersall, Virtue, Kinsman, M.igses Scrimgeour, S. Wilson, McNally, Calvert, McTaegart, Messrs Banks-, Tattersall, Stowed, Johnston (Treasurer), Berryman, jun., Bowbyea, Butcher, J. Roberts, Beat tie, J. Davie, Knight, and Cleworth (Secretary).

As will be seen by notification elsewhere, Madame Alice will open her classes in connection with the academy of artistic dressmaking and milliner j in the first floor of Hobbs' buildings to-morrow. Madame Alice has been for four years located in Auckland, carrying on the same system of teaching, but has come here on account of her health.

On Tuesday evening last Mr Goulding, guard of the Little River train, who has been transferred to Bennetto, was presented by his feUow employees on the Little RiverLincoln line with a handsome marble clock. Mr Bean, stationmaster Little River, who made the presentation, said they all regretted Mr Goulding's departure, and referred to the good feeling existing between the recipient and the employees on the branch, wishing hi 3 wife, family, and himself 3very happiness, and a pleasant stay in his new home. Mr Goulding suitably responded. •
