DUNEDIN NOTES.

January 28. The Star directs the attention of the Minister of Justice to the erratic proceedings of some of the Justices who preside at the Police Court. It saj's that " matters have come to such a pass as to be a positive scandal, obviously unsound findings being no longer received with surprise, while the punishments recorded, are capricious in nature and degree."' As was expected, Opoho CO. defeated Grange on the first inuinge, but 'the latter made a good stand in their second venture, Johnston showing a return to his old form. He made 50 nob out. This leaves Grange and Carisbrook ties for the final round of the Cup.

Euitiier telegrams between the Mayor and the Premier, are entertaining. Mr Seddon telegraphs :—" The question of conducting the licensing elections is a somewhat complicated matter and is still before the Cabinet, and a definite decision will be arrived at on receipt of the advice of the law officers. I have franked your long telegram of this day's date, otherwise it tnight appear as though umbrage -were taken. In the future kindly send telegrams at the expense of the borough, for I do not wish to be brought into conflict with the Post and Telegraph Department. You are fajhy aware that telegraphic communications as. between local authorities and the Government are not free, the cost of the telegram in.question was 13s 4d.—R. J. Seddon." The reply to this was from the Town Clerk, as follows:—"His .Worship the Mayor, in reply to yoar telegram, instructs rue do say that he had thought— erroneously it appears—that as his telegram to you was necessitated by the neglect of a Government Department in not replying to four telegrams oa an important and uigent matter of public business, it was proper to send the telegram as 'collect, , and that it would have been so recognised by you. As you think otherwise, the Mayor will defray the cost,.and I am sending you a Post Office Order for 23a 4d —the cost of the telegram. —W. B. Taslob, Town Clerk."
