COMPLIMENTARY SMOKE CONCEPT.

Mr Dave Matson was entertained at a smoke concert at Henry's Commercial Hotel, Ashburton, on Tuesday evening. Mr Hugo Friediander presided, and there was a large and representative gathering. The concert was given as a welcome to Mr Matson on his return from the recent Athletic Meeting in Victoria, and to afford his friends an opportunity of congratulating him on having won the 440 yards Hurdles Championship, and at the same time put up a world's record. Mr Matson was warmly complimented on his success, and the gathering was the most successful of the kind ever held iv Ashburton. * During the evening Mr David Thomas .intimated his intention of assisting in taking a team of Ashburton athletes to Dunedin to compete at the meeting to be held there in February, and read out a list of the names of those he would like to go into training at once, at the same time expressing the opinion they would give a good account of themselves. Mr D. Matson, on rising to respond to the toast of his health, received a great ovation. He briefly referred to the athletic meeting fn which he had taken part, and spoke highly of the manner in which the team was entertained after the Championship meeting. Some good songs were sung during the evening.
