The Education Board have adopted a report made by a special Committee increasing the rate of pay to female pupil teachers, and only those making a creditable final pass iv their examinations will be token on the permanent staff. The scale of payment to female certificated teachers will be:— For the commencement as fifth assistants at the annual .salary of £80, fourth ditto at £90, third ditto at £100, heads of infant departments (under Head Masters of main schools) £125, first assistants in girls' school £150. Male assistants are classed—A, ealary £100 ; B, £125 ; C, £150 ; D, £200. The reductions made in teachers' salaries iv 1880 have been restored. No teacher will be eligible for appointment to the charge of a school which has an average attendance of thirty and over who does not hold a D certificate. It wae also decided to increase the capitation grant to School Committees 10 per cent. The foregoing alterations gave satisfaction to the members of the Board who had advocated a revision of salaries, and will take effect from January Ist, 1894. The Minister of Education is to be waited on by a, deputation from the Education Board urging Wellington's claims for the larger grant which is absolutely necessary to keep psfee with the educational requirements of this rapidly growing district. The Eight Hour Demonstration Committee have no& yet got a holiday proclaimed for the 25th October, and the Public Works Committee will recommend the City Council to-morrow night not to grant a holiday on the date mentioned. The Demonstration Committee are meantime making preparations for an elaborate celebration, and in order to mark the progress year by year in the industries of the colony, have decided to offer substau tial prizes to the best display by different firms on Demonstration Day. Sir Robert Stout will give a reply this week to the request that he should contest the Wellington seat at the general election. A petition asking him to consent is being numerously signed.
