CHARGE OF EMBEZZLEMENT. Ernest Broad, of the firm of Fergusou and Broad, has been arrested on a charge of misappropriating a cheque for £2650. The accused has been remanded for a week. SUSPENSION OF A BUILDING SOCIETY. The Newcastle Permanent Building Society has suspended payment. The cause is attributed to continued withdrawal of deposits. THE DIAMOND RING ROBBERY. Charles Stratford, bricklayer, has been arrested on suspicion of being connected with the robbery from Alcoek's jewellery shop in August, when a case of diamond rings, valued at £2000, was snatched off the counter. The accused was remanded for a week and bail was refused. ASSOCIATION OF SCIENCE. Adelaide, (September 27. Sir J. Hector inducted Professor Tate as new President of the Association of Science. ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN. Kobart, September 27. A raau named Bridges has been arrested on a charge of attempting to wreck the express train from Hobart to Launcestou, and remanded.
