-«_ In the import market the principal feature of the week has been the arrival of new Queensland sugars, about 100 tons of Millaquin having been landed in perfect condition. This favourite make is reported well up to standard in colour and percentage of saccharine, and is meeting with ready sale at £25 5s to £25 10s. The San Francisco mail brings details of the early stages of the silver panic in the United States. What may be termed the currency famine was exercising a disastrous influence upon trade of all kinds, and for a time many large canning and other industries were compelled to shut down. Later cable advice denotes, however, that the difficulties are being overcome, and that the packing Companies on the Pacific coast are again at work. The Alice sailed for Lyttelton direct from New York on July 7th, and the Obed Baxter via Dunedin on the 26th, their combined shipments of kerosene for this port being only 1000 cases. The Waipa was on the berth to sail about the middle of September. Reports of the French vintage are extremely satisfactory. Since 1875 "the vines have not shown such a splendid appearance as they did when the mail left, and the probable yield will be as large and as fine as any that has ever been gathered.
