EDUCATION BOARD.
An ordinary meeting of the North Can - torbury Board of Education was held yesterday. Present—Messrs R. Westenra (Chairman), T. W. Adams, H. W. Peryman, and T. H. Anson. It was decided to advertise for a male teacher to fill the vacancy at the Sydenham school. Appointments were made as under, upon Committee's recommendations : — Kaiapoi Island, Mrs J. Todd, sewing mistress (temporary); Sedgemere, R. Charles, pupil teacher. The Broomfield Committee complained that a lady in the district had endeavoured to disparage the ability of the appointed sewing mistress, and had. opened a free sewiug class on a Friday afternoon. The Committee had decided that sewing done at classes out of the school could not be accepted at the examination. The Board approved of the action of the Committee. At several meetings of the Board letters were read from Mr J. H. Newlyn, of Halkett, protesting against the mauner of appointment of the head master to the Prebbleton school, and asserting that undue iufluence had bsen used by one of the Inspectors. The Board demanded explanations and Mr Newlyn'a authority for the assertion. Mr Newlyn finally wrote that until a public inquiry might be instituted he desired to keep his informant's name private, but would be satisfied and apologise if he*were assured by the Board that none of its officers had unfairly influenced the Prebbleton Committee in the matter of the appointment. The Board decided to refer the whole question and correspondence to the Inspector indicated, for his reply.
A letter was read from the Tju Tapu School Committee enclosing a resolution which expressed astonishment that the Board had accepted Miss Guise's resignation and had advertised to fill the vacancy before the Committee had received the resignation. Mr Veel read his reply, to the effect that there was no intention of putting a slight oil the Committee. The only object in advertising was to assist the Committee in getting the vacancy filled without delay. Miss Guise sent her resignation to the Board the day ehe sent it? to the Chairman of the School Committee, and there was no irregularity. ■-:■: Mr Pebymak said he was Chairman at the last meeting of the Board, when the resignation came up, and none knew that it came otherwise than through the Committee. Mr Veel pointed out that the Act did not make it necessary for the letter to come through the Committee. The resignation had to be sent to the Secretary of the Board and the Chairman of the Committee at the same time, which had been done. The Board approved of the reply the Secretary had forwarded. Applications were received to fill the vacancies at the Tai Tapu, Loburn North, Ashley, aud Christchurch West schools, and the namee of the suitable applicants were selected and ordered to be sent on to the respective Committees. The Buildings Committee reported that the Kowai Bush Committee had been requested ia answer to an - application for tune's, to forward tenders for the proposed repairs of damage done by the gale; the Kaikoura Suburban Committee to supply estimate ot cost of papering; the Wmslow Committee's application refused for £2 7s 3d for cutting fences, as the expenditure was unauthorised.
