DUNEDIN NOTES.
September 8, The Star waimly approves Mr McLean's proposal to make Stipendiary Magistrates Chfthpien of Licensing Committees, and feel confident that the intelligence of the country will be entirely with Mr McLean in bis proposal. "We do not understand that ha proposes to go beyond that in amending the Bill, a though it is quite open to argument whether it would not be litsirablo to leave tho administration, of tjt« liquor laws entirely hi the. hands of Magistrates. The Bill, however, ptovides for largely:extended licensing districts, and the presumption is that members elected to tho Committees would be representative men, not mere nominees of a clique. With Resident Magistrates as Chairmen to keep them right as to law and rules of evidence the Committees might reftMßUbly ba expected to faithfully carry out the spirit and letter of the statute. We hope the Government will give way upon thf point, for in doing so we feel certain they will meet with the approval of the country." Endeavour is being made to bring Mr ,PinktrXjon and uvhei" local members down to Uke part in Monday's meeting, re Seacliffe affairs, but they decline to be drawn. Tho Executive of the Women's Franchise .Attoeiation are energetically enrolling woman They declare they will place 1700 women on the Dunedin and Caversham rolls,
