ASHBURTON RACING CLUB.

For the second day of the Spring Meeting the weather was all that could be desired, and the attendance was considerably larger than on the Wednesday. The ; racing was again of a highly interesting character, moat of the finishes being close and exciting. Rosehill and Vogengang were made the favourites for the chief '• event, but the Cup winner, when holding : an advantage, swerved from the course i just after rounding the turn for home, completely extinguishing his chance, and the final portion of the race was left to the other fancied candidate and Au He voir, the latter running with his accustdmed gameness securing the verdict, besides a very fair return for his backers. Awarua j Rose, who rau disappointing, came out later in the Welter Handicap, ; and won with a good deal to spare, and it would seem that tbe horse is j seen to best advantage in heavy weight : events. Matariki followed up his first victory by appropriating the Hakatere Steeplechase, the only other to fini*h, ; as on the first day, being Bell Bird. The success of the Longbeach horse was again received with the most evident satisfaction, cheers being lustily given when weight was declared. The finish between Nenuphar and Jacob Faithful in the : Wincbmore Handicap was so close that until the numbers were hoisted most people were in doubt which had won, the placing being in favour of the dual winner of the lirst day. The rioing of Warrington in the race was deemed so unsatisfactory that McConachie, who had tbe mount on Mr Brown's colt, was suspended for a month. A fitting conclusion to the sport was a capital finish between My Jack and Kate Greenaway in iheFlyiug Handicap, the colt gaining the supremacy. The investments on the totalisator for the day was .£1222, the total for the meeting £2494, being £050 less than that operated on ac last Spring meeting.
