The imports for last month show a decrease of £200,000', but the exports fncreased £190,000. YACHTING. At Southampton regatta the Royal Viotoria race was won by the Britannia, with the American yacht Navahoe second. AN UNPOPULAR REMARK. Mr W. Brodrick, member for Guildford, addressing a political meeting, Btigmatised Mr Gladstone as an old donkey, aud said it was time he was turned out. The audience became very indignant, and turned on Mr Brodrick, who fled from the meeting and took refuge in a farmhouse. SCUTTLING SHIPS. Hobbe, shipbroker of Edinburgh, was sentenced to seven years, and Severn, shipmaster, to five, iqr scuttling four ships and burning another. They admitted having fabricated three bills of lading in order to seoure extra insurance. ■ ' - SUEZ CANAL COMPANY. Mr Dawes, the well-known shipping magnate, has been elected a director of the Suez Canal Company in' the place of the late Sir W. Mackinnon. CHOLERA. Washington, August 9. An Italian steamer has arrived at New York with cholera on board. POLITICAL MISSION TO CABUL. Calcutta, August 8. A political mission, under Sir H. Durand, will visit Cabul on behalf of the Indian Government.
THE SILVER QUESTION IN INDIA.
Mr Chaplin conteuded that the closing of the mints had despoiled India of twenty millions. Sir ,W. retorted that it was a mischievous statement made with a view to influence native opinion. Sir John Lubbock considered the increased value of.the rupee would recoup the loss on the uncoined silver.
