ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

At the fortnightly meeting of the Richmond Guild on Monday evening the subject for the evening was "Should the franchise be extended to the women." Mr Smith took the negative, and Mr Riordac the affirmative. A general discussion took place, and the vote at the close was in favour of women having the franchise. The Church of Christ L Sunday School anniversary was celebrated last evening at the Meeting House. The building was decorated for the occasion. A% .6-o'clock the children and friends sat down to au excellent tea provided by Mr W. Crowe. -The after meeting was presided over by Mr H. Hannam, Superintendent of the schooL An orchestra and the school children, under the direction of Mr H. Lane, contributed several items. Mr T. G. Dyson gave an address of welcome to Mr J. T. Bull, who has come to labour for a. short period as evangelist with the church. Mr Crowe, on behalf of the church, presented an illuminated address to Mr Dyeon in recognition of his past services to the. church. Addresses" were also delivered by Mr Bull and Mr Martin. A number of prize 3 were distributed to the children. Recitations were given by Misses Denxnan, Fuchs, Hannam, Webster, Pattinson, Williams, and Messrs Cameron and Williams. Songs were given by Mrs Wood and Master MitchelL Miss Alice Oakley was presented with a teacher's Bible in recognition of her services as organist to the school. The Lyceum was very full last night when the ladies of the Fi;eethought Association i gave a social. The arrangements were very good, and the ladies had provided profusely ioi their, numerous guests. An enjoyable ; evening'was spent, and the dancing was kept up until after midnight. . A very successful concert Was given last night at St. John's Schoolroom, under the conductorship of Mr H. Weir. The vocal items were given by Mrs Fopham, Miss Watkins, Miss A. Greenwood, Mrs Ed«ar, Messrs Maitland Gardner, and BL Weir. Mr Painter played a violin solo, and Miss Vartha and Miss Powell played a piano duet. At the East Belt schoolroom on Monday evening the Rev. F. W. Isittdeliveredalecture entitled " From Slave Hut to Senate." The rer. lecturer depicted the horrible atrocities Ito which the renowned Fred. Douglass was i subjected to as a slave lad, and recounted his rise to the Senate. The lecture was listened to with rapt attention by a large audience, and at the close a vote of thanks was passed on the motion of Mr Howard, who said the lecture was the most interesting he had ever heard.
