Just now Lyttelton harbour is looking very deserted. The sailing last night of the ateainei-3 Dingadee and Wakatu left the wharves devoid of shipping with the exception of the barque Thurso, laid up, and the small coasting ketch The wharves have not bsen so bare of shipping for the past two years.

The Harbour Board have taken advantage of the absence of shipping to give the tug a complete overhaul. She was floated out of the dock on Wednesday evening, after having been cleaned and painted, and having her machinery thoroughly cleaned and put in first class order.

The steamer Jane Douglas was placed ou the patent slip yesterday for cleaning and painting.

The tug is expected to be engaged next week laying across the harbour lrom the heads the new telephone cable imported by the Harbour Board last year. She is fitted throughout with the electric light, aud is upholstered in magnificent fashion. The builders expect she will do the voyage from Faatnet to Sandy Hook in five days twelve hours. Her engine-room is kept secret from practical engineers. Her sister ship, the Lucania, was to be ready ! early in July. ! The s.s. Kahu arrived on her quarterly i trip from the Chathams last evening.
