FREEMAN KITCHEN'S CASE.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
DUNEDIN, May 14. W. Freeman Kitchen will be sent on to Wellington to-morrow to answer a charge of wife desertion.
With reference to Kitchen's case, the New Zealand Times has been informed that Mr Joseph Kitchen, of Wellington, the mother of Mrs W. Freeman Kitchen, living at Ashurst, and Mr J. Kitchen's brother residing in Melbourne, some time ago received letters from a Mrs Watson, of Launceston, Tasmania, about Mr William Freeman Kitchen. Mrs Watson informed them of the death of that gentleman in her house, and asked refund of funeral expenses paid by her, as she was a poor widow who could not afford to be at a loss. Mrs Crichton (Mrs W. F. Kitchen's mother), at once communicated with her sons iv Wellington, requesting them to pay tLe money on her "behalf. They naturally wanted some particulars, aud prudently required confirmation. Ihey joined with Mr Joseph Freeman, of Wellington, and sent over to a friend in Hobart to make inquiries, and Mr Kitchen visited his daughter-in-law at Ashurst to discuss the sad news and make necessary rrrangements. A memorial service was held at Ashurst, and much sympathy expressed for the widow by the iriendS of the family. Since then a reply was cabled by Mr Kitchen's friend at Hobart that he had ascertained that Mr Freeman Kitcheu was not dead but in New Zealand, and had sent details by letter in the Wairarapa steamer. Mr J. Kitchen and the Messrs Crichton have, during the last few days, received several anonymous cables from Australia informing them that W. F. Kitchen was not dead, and an old friend in Dunedin wired Mr J. Kitchen on Tuesday asking if he had a nephew named Francis Temple Vane, as there was a man in Dunedin passing himself off as such uuder that name.— N.Z. Times.
