McGregor iv New Guiuea, has been appointed Assistant-Colonial Secretary of the Gold Coast Colony. THREATENING MR GLADSTONE. Townsend will be further charged with sending a threatening letter to Mr Gladstone, in which he stated that the Prime Minister recently had a very narrow escape of being shot at Brighton. Later. NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF CANADA. May 12. The Earl of Aberdeen has been appointed Governor-General of Canada in place of Lord Stanley of Preston. MR GLADSTONE AND MR CHAMBERLAIN. Mr Gladstone made a vehement attack on Mr Chamberlain for accusing the Government of withholding an adequate description of their policy. He declared that he had given a fall and explicit explanation in proportion to the stage the Bill had reached. Much angry feeling was displayed, and the evening was wasted. REVOLUTION IN BENGAL. Calcutta, May 11. News has been received that affairs in Orissa, in Bengal, are in a critical condition. Ten thousand insurgents surround the Rajah- palace.
