The Trades and Labour Council has resolved that the Council views with apprehension the influx of foreigners, particularly in the gum field districts, and urges the Government to at once investigate the matter. The Native meetiug which has been conducted at Maungakawi, near Cambridge, by Tawhiao has come to au end. No business of any consequence was trans»cted. Tawhiao iuformed the Natives that the Governor was too busy to attend.

A general store at Whangaroa, belonging to Mcintosh, was burned early this morning with its contents. The stock was insured for £300 -in the South British office.

WELLINGTON, May 12. The Government have'arranged with the Railway Commissioners for the construction in the workshops of £4000 worth of additional rolling stock for the Government lines.

A snake two and a half feet in length was landed from the island steamer Taviuni today. It was found in a bunch of bananas.

The repairs to the Hauroto cannot be effected until to-morrow, and consequently her departure for Sydney is again postponed.

Advice has been received that the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish rite of Freemasonry in Italy has conferred the 33rd Degree on Brother George Robertson of Wellington, Past Grand Secretary of the New Zealand Constitution.

OAMARU, May 12. Edward Mortimer attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat last night at Duntroon. He lies in a precarious condition. DUNEDIN, May 12.
