DRAINAGE RATES.
TO THE EDITOR OF THB PRESS, Sir,—ln reading the report of the meeting of the Board held on the 2nd inst., I notice the business consisted—First, the Secretary and Treasurer's reports, next the Engineer reported, finally the Secretory was instructed in accord with the several reports of the Secretory, Treasurer and Engineer. All very nice. Now, lam informed these several officers are really combined in one individual. A veritable Poobah. An amount of £6135 was passed for payment, being the amount of the halfyearly payment on account of loan. Now, all the rates are levied and collected by the several local bodies, and paid by them into the Bank. By far the greater portion is collected by the City Council. Why coald not the amounts due from the several local bodies be adjusted, and the City Council or aSpeoial Committee draw these two halfyearly cheques, amounting to £12,275, thtuf savin? the cost of this Bhow, tho effect w which would be to considerably reduce the rates upon the rural districts.—Yours, &a, Ratepayk-- ,
