PROHIBITION.
TO THK EDITOR OF TUE PRESS. Sir,—The folio whig, which I copy from the Temperance column of 'he Christian World, may interest the electors of Syd« Q . ham in view of the coming contest. Might I, therefore, beg you to publish thsm in your widely-read journal I—Yours, &c, Direct Veto. "Some interesting facts have bten Enblished respecting Toxteth, a district iv liverpool without a single drink-shop; The owner of the estate years ago laid it oat for building, prohibiting the sale of intoxicants, It has now 60,000 inhabitants, and total prohibition may be said to reign over the whole district. The death rate is only from 10 to 14 per 1000 against 40 per 1000 which is common in districts where pubtia. houses abound. Its houses show rents of a third more value than similar ones iv other districts. Pawnshops are practically anknown. In a neighbouring district, where there are 100 drink-shops, pauperism and crime are chronic, and the mortality it high."
