A barque was signalled as coming from the South yesterday morning, and upon her numbers being made she proved to be the Alastor, Captain Gazebrook, from Fremantle. We are indebted to the Chief Officer, Mr C. Harwood, for the following particulars of the voyage. Left Fremantle on April Ist, with light" S.E. to easterly winds. Had head and baffling winds for nearly the whole run across the Tasman sea, and rounded the Snares on May 3rd with light northerly winds. On May 7th had a strong easterly to north-east breeze, and on May Bth a moderate gale from the S.W. Sighted Akaroa light at 3 a.m. on the 9th, and arrived in port at 2.30 p.m. the same day. The Alastor brought some eight passengers, a list of whom appears above. She comes in ballast to the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association and will load grain for the Channel for orders.

San Francisco, says the Commercial Netvs of March 27th, is not by any means the only large port in the world where there is a large fleet of ships laid up awaiting engagements. Reports from all sections of the globe show that in almost every port there is a large amount of tonnage lying idle. The disengaged tonnage of deep water vessels in the port on one day recently, not including steamers, was a little over 84,000 tons. From a private letter received from Captain Minns, of the British ship Leyderhorn, dated Calcutta, February 18th, it is learned that at that time there was a fleet of ships on the Hooghley with an aggregate registered tonnage ot 90,000 tons, disengaged. The Leyderhorn was chartered to load a cargo of wheat and seed for Hull, direct.
