THE SAVAGE CLUB.
-♦— The first meeting of' the Savage dub in their new quarters, the commodious hall of the Chamber of Commerce, was held last night. There was a very large attendance of members when, to the tuneful strains of "The Lode, ,, the imposing procession of officials wended its devious way to the whare-puni of the mighty chief, headed by the mystic mace or war club. A genial Savage not altogether unknown in Hereford ttreet, and not wholly unconnected with smart record runs of steamers, occupied the post of honour, and filled the chair with a cannibalistic grace all big own. Several most interesting items were given, and a vast store of information on very abstruse snbject3 afforded to the listening circle of braves clustered round the council fire. For instance, one erudite Savage discuned in rhythmic numbers on the discovery of a fragment of a Greek play in the historical neighbourhood of Kaiapoi. Another, etill more poetical, spoke of Runic rhymes and the varied fortunes told by bells. Yet another poured forth from the violin a flood of melody, the composition of the player, who "is native and to the manner born" as regards New Zealand. The sparkling, though somewhat democratic, Sydney Bulletin was represented by a member of its staff, . who savage like chanted bis merry roundelay to the accompaniment of the festive banjo. So the programme went on fast and furious until the closing finale of the Club, which inculcates as early return to the domestic circle, sent all the Savages away fully contented with a most The D.LC, with a liberality which is worth recording, placed a piano at the disposal of the 'Club, and Savage Merton showed off its capabilities to the best advantage in the accompaniments.
