MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATIONS.
The weekly meeting of the Durham street Wesleyan Mutual Improvement Society was held at the Durham street vestry on Friday evening. Rev. H. R. Devvsbury occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members and friends. Leeturettes were given by the following :—Messrs J. W. Jb'frost, F. Willis, R. England, and W. Christian. Each of the productions were criticised by a number of the members present.
The winter session of the Woolston Mutual Improvement Society was opened in the Wesleyan Church on Thursday evening. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Rev. J. T. ifotfc, M.A. ; Vice-Presidenta, Mrs Wise, Mr Ellison, and Mr A. Wilson; Secretary, Miss Cordery; Treasurer, Miss Ellison; Journal Editor, Miss Clark; Organist, Mr D. McHarg; Committee, Miss Boundy, Messrs J. W. Hillary, M. L. Gimbiett, C C. Bottomble, and W. T. Thomas. The syllabus drawn up by the retiring Committee was placed before the meeting and accepted without alteration.
On Thursday evening there was a good attendance at the meeting of the Kaiapoi Mutual Improvement Association in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, Rev. J. S. Smalley in the "chair. The journal which was read included *♦ A dream," a poem "By the sad sea waves," a chapter on "Bicycling for ladies," a dissertation on "Are women rational beings," and an article on "Egypt," all of which afforded some entertainment. t
