RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL

A special meeting of this Council was keld oa Friday evening at 7 p.m. Present — The Mayor (Jflr J. Sansom), Crs. Blackett, Foster, Ivory, Roberts, and Keir. The meeting was held to hear objections to the burgess roll, but as none were made, the roll was passed and duly signed. The ordinary monthly meeting was held at 7.30, when the same members were present, with the additioa of Crs. Good and Jennings.' Apologies were made for the absence of Crs. Cone and Dobson. The following letters were read :—A receipt from the Treasurer, Relief Fund, Brisbane, for the last remittance sent by the Mayor. From the Clerk, Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board, offering to pay £2 per fire towards the expense of the Fire Brigade, attending fires taking place in the district, provided the owners of property are unable to pay the amount. It was decided not to accept the offer, and to inform the Board that in future the Brigade cannot be allowed to go out3ide the boundaries of the borough. Mr W.Busswroteaskingforasettlemeut for land taken under the Public Works Act for a drain. Decided to pay the amount. From the Secretary to the Charitable Aid Board, stating the amount that the borough is called upon to pay towards its funds for the year is £42 Is lid ; also, from the Secretary of the Hospital Board, stating that the annual contribution is £33 4s 3d. Mrs Torlesse wrote, askiug for a contribution towards cleaning out the creek which carries the drainage of the borough. After considerable discussion, as to the Council's liability in the matter, it was decided to defer consideration of the same until next meeting. Mr A. W. Steele wrote asking the Council to clean out creek near VVaihi. To be informed that the Council it not liable for the- same beyond the side of the street. The Works Committee reported that a number of drams and side channels required cleaning out; that several foot-paths ought to be re shingled. The contractors lor cleaning drains in the south portion of the borough have completed the work. The report was adopted. The Surveyor's report stated that fifty-two dogs had been registered this year. The aucouuts for the year had been audited by tiie Government luspector. The Town Clerk reported that several persons had registered their dogs for 2s 6J, having made declarations that they were farmers resident in the borough. It was decided to call upou two of the persons named to pay the balance of fees. The financial statement showed that the receipts for the mouth were £79 8s 2d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £62 123 3d, credit balance at Bank £220 13a 9d. An application for an auctioneer's license by Mr W. F. Joynt wa3 received and granted. The motion to strike the yearly rate passed at last meeting was confirmed. The Mayor read a telegram sent by Mra Ballance in reply to his telegram of condolence. The Clerk reported that a piece of land bought for a street had not been duly registered as such, and it was decided that the Council declare that the land was purchased for a street, and that the District Land Registrar be notified of the same. Cra. Good and Foster were appointed to sign the rate roll for 1893-4. Cr. Roberts drew attention to the necessity for the attendance of further police officers in Rangiora on Tuesdays. The meeting then adjourned.
