THE REASON WHY.

"Why is a large stipend ? " " Because it keeps accurate (a curate) going for along time;" . N.B.—Some curates, also some Waterburys, are exceptions. Now, Mr J ,if your Waterbary is an exception to accurate going, you have been imposed on by some trashy imitation; or if you have a genuine Waterbary, and it does not keep accurate time, you will probably find on enquiry round the neighbourhood that it has either been employed to stop an avalanche or snowed in for a year or two, or put to some use not originally contemplated by the makers. Waterburys which have been boiled with old waistcoats at the annual 'wash up," or filled up with porridge or pea soup by enterprising two-year-olds, are not thereafter guaranteed to go. Others whose mainsprings liave been abstracted to repair wire fences are occasionally troublesome, and those which are never wound up have been known to strike work altogether. The genuine Waterbary is above reproach. Sorry we cannot say as ranch for the curate, but this is probably due to the example set in the Synod.
