ROAD BOARDS.

RICCARTOtf.

An ordinary meeting of this Board wa s held on February Bth, at the office, Fendal' ton. Present — Messrs Hall (Chairman), Feather, Stanley, Jackson and Boag. A petition was received, signed by M. B. Campbell and twenty other ratepayers of Ptpanui and ita neighbourhood, praying the Board to call a public meeting to take into cdnaideration the question of better drainage by bringing the water-race down the Harewood road to flush the channels at Paptmui. The petition being addressed to the Avon Road Board, it was resolved to forward it to that body with an explanation. The Surveyor's report was read, and the following resolutions were carried:—That notice bo given that the bridge on the Bush Inn road, near Horler'e, is unsafe for traction engines ; that the attention of the Tramway Company be called to the condition of tho tram line on the Harewood road, from Papanui to the railway line, and on the Lincoln road, from Bright'a road past tho ehotr grounds to tho terminus; that the side of the Lincoln road past the new show grounds be repaired with broken metal. A large number of tenders were received for supplying metal for the main roads, and for gravelling by-roads, and one was accepted in each case. Tho ftate Collector's report was read. It was resolved to remit mtes in three cases of poverty, and to buo at once for all outstanding rated. After accounts had been passed, the proceedings terminated.

ELLESMEBE.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held at Leeston on the Ist inst. Present— Messrs Q. (X Waby (Chairman), R. Lockhead} and W. Watson. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : —From Mr G. F< Simpson, calling attention to a weak bridge on Inwood'e road. Resolved that the JJoard could not recognise atiy responsibility for damage sustained by traction engines crossing any of the Board's bridges, which are constructed only to carry ordinary traffic. However, planke will bo provided for pereona croseing bridges with eiaginek tfrom Mr & Palaireb, enquiring why the road leading to his section, JSfo. 10151, had not been maoadainised. It was resolved to inform Mr Pftlaitet that the Board had already expended as much money on this toad as it could consistently with a fair distribution of the rates pro - rata over the district. Mr F. Jameuon waited oh the Board and requested that a water supply should bo provided for fire prevention purposes. Ho suggested that & supply could be brought from the Leefiton creek round the main street, and returned to the drain at the Koad Board office corner. The discussion of the subject was held over until next Board day. On the motion of Mr Lock head, seconded by Mr Watson, it Was resolved to write to Mr B. B. Willie, calling hie attention to about 75 chains, more or less, of plonghlng which has been done on the Bides of Benny's ttnd Waby'e roads, fronting on his property at Willisden, and • claiming 33 per chain as damages for the disturbance df the surface of the said roads without written permission of the Board, and contrary to the provisions of the Public Works Act, 1932. The Overseer's report was read and considered. It was 'decided to call for tenders for leasing various shingle reserves for a term of years. The amounting to £ISB 5e 7d, was passed for payment. The Board unanimously desired to place on record their deep sympathy with Mr P. J. Henley during his continual severe illness. The meeting then terminated.

KOWAI.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held on February 4th. Present—Messrs R. Bristow (chairman), J. Cameron and R. MeAdam. Acoounte amounting to JB6 18s 7d were passed for payment; receipts for the month, £63 17s 3d. Correspondence was read—From the Selwyn County Council, forwarding account £4 Oβ 4d, share of expenditure incurred by the Council in repairing White's bridge on the North road from the 23rd November, 1887, to the 31st December, 1891. Cheque to be forwarded. From Mr D. McLaren, asking permission to erect a slaughterhouse on R.S. 2368, Terrace, Leithfield. Granted. It w&s decided to invite tenders for next meeting for the maintenance of the Leithfield outfall drain. Mrs J. Ashworth waited on the Board in reference to getting two pieces of road closed alone: the eastern.boundary of R.S.'a 25123, 20967, 25130, 22426, and in their place to get a new line of road surveyed nearer to the sea beach than the present road lines. Consideration deferred till a full meeting of the Board. The Clerk's report was read and considered. It was decided to invite tenders for next meeting to supp)y shingle for repairs to several roads in the district. The Board then adjourned.

TAI TAPU.

The ordinary meeting was held on February fath. .Present—Messrs Macartney (chairman), J. Leatham, and Wm. Gilmour. Correspondence was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, enclosing tracing of the piece of land, being part of the tramway reserve, which it is proposed to recommend for settlement purposes. It was resolved that the Commissioner be informed that this Board would strongly object to the disposal of the piece of land referred to, except as a recreation ground for the district, for which purpose this Board applied for it some time since. This Board hopes that as a matter of, justice the Land Board will recommend that this land may be reserved for recreation purposes. It was also resolved that the Hon. Mr Rolleston's attention be called to his letter of June 25th last, intimating that this land is leased for seven years, and consequently could not be otherwise dealt with,]; and that he be respectfully aeked to use his influence to have the land reserved for recreation purposes for the people of the district. From the Selwyn County Council re cost of cleaning the river Halswell, &c. It was resolved that the Council be informed that this Board is advised that the Council has overcharged this district in the cost of the case Gilmour r County Council, and that should this be eqoally distributed over the county this Board would be in credit after debiting the cost of cleaning the river for the past year. This Board will be glad to hear the Council's version of thie matter. From same, re charitable aid. It was resolved that this cum be paid. From Resident Magistrate's Court, that £11 10a is lying at the Court waiting to be claimed by this Board. The Clerk's report was read and various wcrks postponed. From Mr Gould, re contract on main drain. Read. A resident waited on the Board, asking that he may be recommended for charitable aid. It was resolved that this case be strongly recommended, as the Board is of its own knowledge awsure that it i« a most deserving one. After passing accounts for payment the Board adjourned.
