lieufcenant'Colonel James Augustus Grant, C.8., C.S.L, F.R.S., F.L.S., son of the late Rev. James Grant, minister of Nairn, N. 8., born at, Nairn in 1827, was educated at the grammar school and Marischal College, Aberdeen, fie was appointed in 1846 to the Indian Army, served under General Whisht both sieges of Mooltan, was present'at the battle of Goojerat under Lord... Gough, for which he received the medal and two clasps ; was Adjutant of the Bth N.I. for five years, *nd baggagemaster to Sir James Outram'a force in August, 1857.; and did duty with the 78th Highlanders, under General Havelock, at thei .relief: of tiucknow, where ,he wae wounded, while- in command ol two companiee of the 78th Highlanders who formed the rear guard of the army. For these eervicea her received the Mutiny medal and clasp lot" Relief of Lucknow." In 1860-d he explored the sources of the Nile in company with the late Captain Speke, who published bis *f Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile " in J863, for which he was made a C.B. (Ciyji Division) in September, 1866. He served in the Intelligence Department with the Abyssinian expedition wider Lord Napier of Magdala in 1868, and was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Star of India for his services in that capacity (medal for Abyssinia).
