SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The Waltham Committee met on Thursday evening. Present — Messrs S. P. Andrews (Chairman), Gow, Langdown, Baker, McLeery, Smith and Maddreu. The Chairman reported that steps had been taken to secure the use of the Sydenham Public Bath for the use of the scholars during prescribed hours. The school accounts had been audited, and a credit balance remained of £25. The head master reported that the average attendance at school last week was 351, the. number on the roll being 393. The roll number was now' 409, and the attendance being considerably greater than the accommodation warranted, some steps to provide increased accommodation were necessary.; The school was built for 350 children. • The infant department was meant to accommodate 120 or 130 children, but it was no unusual thing to have as many as 167 present. A credit balance of 19s 2d Was left over from the prize fund. A copy of the .report was authorised to be sent to the Board of Education, urging the necessity for additions to the school buildings. It was also deemed necessary that the master's house should be at once built on the school grounds. It was resolved —"That this Committee is exceedingly gratified at the success of all the pupil teachers (four) having passed their first year's examination with first honours, and that Mr Hughes.be complimented on the result."

The monthly meeting of the Lyttelton Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Present—Mr G. Laurenson (chairman), Revs. Chambers and Tinsley, and Mr H. Aliwright. An apology for nonattendance was received from the Rev. J. H. Mackenzie. The headmaster's report showed the number on the roll of the main school to be 737, and the average attendance 635. There were 104 names on the roll of the side school with an average attendance of 95. A list of those children who had been irregular in their attendance accompanied the report, and it was decided to forward the list to the police with a request for them to take immediate action in the matter. Seventeen applications were received for the three vacant pupil teacherships, and it was decided to appoint Misses Lewis and Hewitt and Mr R. Stout to the positions. It was decided to support Messrs J. Joyce, M.H.R., J. T. Smith, and R. Weateura for seats on the Board of Education. The Secretary was instructed to convey to the headmaster the Committee's appreciation of the success attending-the late pupil teachers' examinations at which all the school's teachers had passed. A. few small matters were left in the hands of the Chairman to carry out, and the meeting terminated.: , The monthly meeting of the Yaldhurafc School Committee was held on Friday evening. Present—Messrs Freeman (Chair* man), Chiahall, W. J. Guy, Johnston, W. H. Taylor, and Hibbert. The Inspector's report upon the receut examination was read. The results attained showed a considerable improvement on those of the previous year, the passes being 14 per cent, in excess and failures 7 per cent. less. Votes of thanks were accorded to the teachers for their efforts, which had produced such a satiefacr tory result. It was resolved to vote for Messrs Cuiry, Joyce, and Monro, to fill the vacancies on the Board of Education. Accounts were passed, and the meeting adjourned.

A meeting of the Leeston Committee was held on Monday to elect a pupil teacher in place of Miss Etvenaon, who is leaving for the Normal School. There were two applications, Sheldon Cradock being the success* ful candidate. The Committee nominated Messrs R. Westenra, J. Joyce, and J. T. Smith for the vacant seats: in the Board of Education.

The ordinary meeting of the Ashburton Committee was held on Monday evening. Present—Messrs \V. Craighead ((Jhairman), R. S. Beaa, W. Baker, R. W. Barratt, E. J. Paul, and J. W. Silcock. The master's report showed a satisfactory attendance, and also that the pupil-teachers who had gone up for their examinations had all passed with credit. The Committee re* corded votes in favour of Messro Westenra, Adams, and Saunders to fill the vacancies on the Board of Education. On the motion of Mr Paul, the Committee unanimously passed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr E. G. Wright, SLH.R., for hie generosity in providing special trains in connection with the recent school picnic to Springburn ; also to Mr W. C. Walker and Mr Isaac Sargent for their voluntary donations towards the incidental expenses. At the monthly meeting of the Little River School Committee the members present were—Messrs G. T, Sefton (Chairman), A. Mevers, T. Radford, and H. Tnoinas. Mr Gilling reported. . that the attendance daring the past three weeks had been very unsatisfactory, the average attendance having been only about ninety-six, and the highest attendance for the period 106. It was resolved-i-That the school be closed on regatta day, ana that the Committee support the candidature of Mr J. Joyce for a seat on the Board of Education.
