THE HILTON ARSON CASE.

The remarkable arson case, in which H. D. D. Homes was charged with wilfully setting fire to his dwelling house, the Hilton Hotel, on December 6th, was concluded "at thY Supreme Court, Timaru, yesterday. The only persons in the house at the time, 2 a.m., were Homes and a man named Ineson.. . The latter swore that Homes talked of burning the place for the insurance, that he woke him np when the place was in flames, and said he had fired it; that he offered him £20 to say he (Ineson) discovered the fire, and had roused Homes out of bed, and that the .£2O not being paid he determined to tell the truth. Ineson being confessedly a liar, corroboration of his story was necessary and this was only obtained by a host, of circumstances, Homes , financial embarrassments, reducduction of the stock, misrepresentations in proof of claim, and previous fires. Over a score of witnesses were called for the Crown and a dozen for the defence. The j ory found Homes guilty and he was sentenced to four years'penal servitude. .
