CATHEDRAL SCHOOL.

Yesterday afternoon the Cathedral School j was crowded with the boys and their friends ; who had assembled to hear the report ol the Christmas "examination, aud to hear the prize list read. The. Very Rev. the Dean • presided and apologised for the absence of j his Lordship the Bishop, who was prevented ; by illness from being present. _ t j Mr G. H. Merton read the examiners ; reports, which owing to pressure on our i space we are compelled to hold over. j The Very Rev. the Dean said that he had ; examined the school in Divinity, and was j very pleased with the accurate knowledge : of the Church catechism displayed by the , boys in their papers. With regard to the ; examinations conducted by Mr Rowe, he ; wished to point out that that gentleman had j examined the school the previous year, a , fact which gave greater value to the opinions j expressed in his report, as it had given an opportunity for comparing the work done in the two years. The steady and continuous increase in the attendance at the school was very satisfactory to the governing body. Mr Merton reported that during the past month examinations had been held for Junior Somes' Scholarships at Christ s College. Of these G. Weston, an old Cathedral boy, had gained the one for boys under fifteen, P. Acton Adams was second Bnder fourteen, and J. Miles gained a Icholarship under thirteen. Both the latter were at present attending the school. He ! then referred to the loss the school was sustaining in the resignation of Mr Marshall, and thanked him for the time and energy he had devoted to the games and gymnastics of the school during the year. Mr Marshall had gained the respect and affection of all the boys, and they begged him to accept a set of gold links and studs as a token of esteem. . Mr Mabshau. thanked the boys for their kind present, which he should wear and value as a token of their goodwill towards him. He thought he had sometimes been too exacting in pressing for their attendance at the gymnasium or at the games, tut he had been anxious to teach them selfdenial in their amusements, and felt it was Veil for a boy to sacrifice his own pleasure or his chance of personal distinction in the games, and play for the good of the team to Which he belonged. Before the school was dismissed for the holidays the boys gave an exhibition of Indian clubs to music, under the direction ©f Mr Marshall and Mr Andrews.
