AQUATICS.

On Saturday afternoon the Canterbury Rowing Club held races on the Avon at New Brighton. In consequence of the unsatisfactory state of the river in the riclnity of the boat sheds it was arranged to decide the events at New Brighton between the traffic and tramway bridges. Xhis course is hardly a mile in length, and as the tide was favour of the rowers fcheir tasks were by no means hard, ffhe following are the results:—Trial Double Sculla—First heat—Hobbs and Laurenson v Papprill and Gusgan. Hobbs va» quickest away, and gradually increasing his lead never gave his opponent a chance, winning by three lengths. Second heat —Black and Pemberton v Strouts and Guise. Strouts got a substantial lead owing to his opponent missing the water. Black then, bettered iiie position, and before half a mile had been traversed the boats were level. .From this oat the result was never in doubt, .Black winning by three lengths. Final Heat— Hobbs and Laurenson v Black and Papprill. From an even start Hobbs was the Jlrst to show in front. Black stuck to him eamely, but eventually suffered defeat by two lengths. , Xhe Avon Rowing Club also held some races over the same course on Saturday, with the following results:—Double Sculls—First Heat—Trigzs (stroke), A. Hobbs (bow) v Godfrey istroke), Aldridge {bow;. Triffgs was quickest under way, and held nearly a leugth's advantage for fully three-quarters of a mile. Godfrey then spurted, and for the last few chains the boats were almost level, when Triggs forged ahead and won by a bare halflength. Second Heat—E. Evans (stroke) Musgrove (bow) v Dee (stroke), Tapling (bow). Both crews got away well together, and neither had any advantage for the first half mile. Evans then obtained a lead, iand, being favored with bad steering on £he part of Dee's coxswain, won rather easily by about a length and a half. Final Seat—Triggs and Hobbs v Evans And SMuegrove. Neither crew could claim any Advantage for some distance. Triggs £hen spurted, and placed a length's lead do bis credit. Evans in turn livened up, and 0t one time had almost made up his lost ground. Nearing the winning-post, however, he died away, and Triggs rowed home a winner by nearly two lengths. On Saturday evening a meeting of the JKaiapoi Regatta Committee was held at the Fire Brigade Chamber to consider the Question of the postponement of the Siegattain consequence of the weakness jvrrought among the crews through the influenza epidemic Mr R. Moore, M.H.R., ©resided. Telegrams from the Lyttelton, Sfnion, and Canterbury Rowing Clubs and »letter from the Cure Rowing Club were jre&d advising a postponement. It was moved by Mr T. H. Caverhill, seconded by Sir J. Higglns—"That the Regatta be adjourned from the date fixed, namely, {taxing Day." Carried unanimously. Mr "W. Hume moved, Mr Fan them seconded —"That the Regatta be fixed for Tuesday, January 12th." Carried. It was reported that the Oddfellows' Hall had been secured for the annual ball on Boxing Night, and it was resolved that the regatta ball be held on that day. The meeting then adjourned. The race of the Brighton Sailing Club, for a prize of two guineas presented by in Heath, which took place on Saturday afternoon, was the most exciting that has yet been sailed by the Club. The starters men :—Crest, Wallabi and Ariadne, ecr; Spray and Fukaki, 2min; Truant, lOmin : Canterbury, 20min. At starting, the wind ■was well round to the nor'-east, but by the time the limit boat had reached the tripod it changed round to the east. Thie gave the Canterbury an advantage, and making good use of her allowance she won by a minute and a balf. Pukaki, Crest, Ariadne, Spray, and Truant all finished within a few lengths of each other after a moat exciting finish. The time, lh 7m, was the fastest that has yet been made over the course.
